There’s still no news of a release date for Leeds band Eagulls’ second album which is due this year. The brilliance of their 2014 self-titled debut sets the bar high and raises questions about what direction the five-piece will go in with this LP. ‘Eagulls’ was a highly underrated collection of noisy, angst-filled songs which fused styles of post-punk and pop-punk. Tracks with names like ‘Amber Veins’ and ‘Nerve Endings’ presented songwriting of vivid imagery- most of it dark and gruesome.
However, Eagulls’ first new song in almost 2 years will surprise a few. Switching sinister, deep basslines for jangly, Johnny Marr-esque riffs, the fivesome catch us off guard. The song is still driven by George Mitchell’s despairing yelps but gets dangerously indie pop. ‘Lemontrees’ is inkeeping with Eagulls’ love of imagery but rather than dismal Northern cityscapes, it’s a summery scene of a sun-soaked orchard. Could this be a theme we will see on the band’s sophomore album? Possibly… but we know better than to judge an album by one song by now.
